Where you'll be
What this solves
Tourists in Zürich think "Switzerland = cashless" and head to a mountain hut with their card. The hut has a card reader but no signal — declined. The next hut has no reader at all. The third hut accepts only cash. Knowing which huts are which takes a separate guide; this tool gives a single regional summary.
How to read
- SAC huts: ~30% have unreliable card readers (satellite internet), ~10% no card at all. Cash recommended for the long tour.
- Parking: cities are contactless; mountain villages still want CHF 5 coin or CHF 10 note.
- Farm shops: usually cash only. Some newer ones accept TWINT.
- Apartment rentals: cash deposit is a red flag. Use bank transfer.
Limitations
- Amex acceptance is spotty outside luxury venues — most huts and many restaurants don't take it.
- TWINT (Swiss QR payment app) works in 95% of Switzerland if you have a Swiss SIM or bank.
FAQ
Can I pay CHF 30 hut dinner with card?
~70% of SAC huts: yes. ~20%: yes but signal often fails. ~10%: no. Cash is the universal backup.

About
Built after a 5-day Bernese Oberland tour where I had card-acceptance data from every hut, but couldn't find it aggregated anywhere.
