What this solves
"When's the best time to visit Switzerland?" is the wrong question. The right question is "when is the right month for the thing I actually want to do?" July has the longest snow-free days, but it's also peak thunderstorm season. February has the best stable high-pressure weather — but most huts are closed.
How to read
- Best months (green): stable weather, minimal closures.
- Possible (yellow): workable but check conditions daily.
- Avoid (red): dangerous conditions or full closures.
- High-pressure weeks: best window for climbing above 3,500 m — usually 4-7 days in mid-July to mid-August.
Limitations
- This is climatology — actual 2026 weather may differ. Always check MeteoSwiss 5-day forecast before committing.
- Some huts and lifts run only in specific seasons; this is weather, not necessarily open.
FAQ
When's the best month for the Haute Route (Chamonix-Zermatt)?
Mid-July to early September for hut tour. Late August has the best snow-and-rock balance.
Can I ski in summer?
Yes — above 3,000m glacier ski areas (Saas Fee, Zermatt) operate June–July with reduced lift hours.
