Canton tipping
What this solves
Most "tip in Switzerland" guides quote one national average. The reality: French-speaking cantons are Paris-influenced (10% standard), German-speaking rural cantons are minimal (round up). Locals know. Tourists get it wrong both ways.
How to read
- Geneva: 10% standard for restaurants. Service charge sometimes added separately.
- Appenzell: 0-5% standard. Round up the bill.
- Italian-speaking Ticino: coperto first (CHF 2-5), then tip ~5%.
Limitations
- High-end restaurants in any canton often expect 10%.
FAQ
Can I tip on the card?
Yes in cities, less common in rural areas. Cash is universal.

About
Built because tipping a Genfer waiter 8% raises eyebrows; same tip in Appenzell is generous.
