What this solves
The "Kurtaxe" / tourist tax is one of the most commonly disputed charges on Swiss hotel bills. Hotels charge it on top of the room rate, then pay it to the commune. Airbnb properties sometimes don't collect it — meaning hosts absorb it (illegal) or guests don't pay it (also illegal). This calculator tells you what to expect.
How to read
- Per adult, per night — children under 6–12 usually exempt (varies by commune).
- Often includes: free public transport (Zürich, Lucerne, Bern) and discounts on museums.
- Airbnb: legally required to collect since 2020; some still don't.
Limitations
- Airbnb hosts that don't collect are technically in violation — but reporting them won't win you friends in a mountain hamlet.
- Some alpine communes charge a winter-only supplement (Dec–Mar, up to 50% extra).
FAQ
Does the tourist tax get me anything?
Yes in major cities: Zürich's "City Ticket" gives free trams for the duration of the booking. Lucerne includes a free cable car ride to Bürgenstock. Bern gives museum discounts.
